Diamond Certification Explained: What Buyers Should Know

October 02, 2026

What Is Diamond Certification?

Diamond certification is how a seller puts quality in writing. Instead of a vague promise like “premium diamond”, a certificate records measurable details you can check against the product listing and hold the seller to later.
It also answers the question that matters more today than ever: is this diamond natural or lab-grown? Since the two look identical to the eye, the certificate is where that distinction is recorded. If you’re still deciding between them, read our comparison of lab-grown vs natural diamonds.

Types of Diamond Certificates

Not every diamond certificate is the same kind of document. Here’s how the common types compare.

Gemmological labs such as GIA or IGI

Detailed grading of one individual stone

Larger solitaires, engagement rings

An independent grading report makes most sense for a single large stone, where small grade differences change the price a lot. For everyday jewellery with smaller diamonds (studs, nose pins, slim bands and pendants), a brand quality certificate is the common standard, because grading every small stone individually would add significant cost to the piece.

What a Diamond Certificate Should Include

Whatever the source, a useful diamond certificate usually lists:

•    Diamond type: natural or lab-grown, stated clearly.

•    Colour grade: on the D-to-Z scale.

•     Clarity grade: such as VVS or VS.

•     Diamond weight: total carat weight for the piece.

•     Shape: round, oval, pear, cushion and so on.

•     Metal and purity: for example, 9KT, 14KT or 18KT gold.

•     Product details: a product name or code that ties the certificate to your piece.

If any of these grades are unfamiliar, our guide to the diamond 4Cs explained breaks each one down in plain language.

How to Read and Check a Certificate

A certificate is only useful if you actually check it. When your jewellery arrives:

1.          Match the details. The metal, diamond type and grades should match what the product page promised.

2.          Check the diamond type. A lab-grown diamond should be labelled as lab-grown. Clear labelling is a sign of an honest seller.

3.          Look at total carat weight. On multi-stone pieces, this is the combined weight of all diamonds, not the size of one stone.

4.          Check the gold hallmark separately. In India, BIS-hallmarked gold carries the BIS mark, a purity grade and a six-digit HUID code.

5.          Keep it safe. You’ll want it for resizing, repairs, insurance or returns.

Aspiri’s Quality Assurance Certificate

Every Aspiri diamond piece comes with Aspiri’s own quality assurance certificate, which records the details of the jewellery you’ve bought. The diamond grades are also listed upfront on each product page before you buy. For example, the lab-grown diamond options on pieces like the Ovalisse Diamond Solitaire Stud Earrings and the Crown Cluster Solitaire Ladies Ring are listed at EF colour and VVS–VS clarity.

That means you can compare what’s promised online with what’s certified in the box. Browse more certified designs in our rings collection and earrings collection.

Common Certification Mistakes to Avoid

•             Accepting vague wording. “High quality diamond” isn’t a grade. Look for actual colour and clarity values.

•             Assuming all certificates are the same. Know whether you’re reading an independent lab report or a brand certificate.

•             Confusing gold and diamond certification. A hallmark confirms metal purity only.

•             Losing the paperwork. Store the certificate with your invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a diamond certificate?
- A document that records a diamond’s type and quality grades, such as colour, clarity and carat weight.

Is a brand certificate the same as a GIA or IGI report?
- No. GIA and IGI are independent labs that grade individual stones. A brand certificate is issued by the seller and covers the finished piece.

Do small diamonds need individual grading reports?
- Usually not. Small stones in everyday jewellery are commonly covered by a brand quality certificate instead.

Does a certificate say if a diamond is lab-grown?
- It should. Clear labelling of natural or lab-grown is a basic requirement of any trustworthy certificate.

Does Aspiri provide a certificate?
- Yes. Aspiri diamond jewellery comes with Aspiri’s own quality assurance certificate.
