Diamond 4Cs Explained: Cut, Color, Clarity & Carat

September 30, 2026

What Are the 4Cs of Diamonds?

The 4Cs give every buyer and jeweller the same vocabulary for diamond quality. A graded diamond gives you specific results you can compare from one stone to the next, instead of vague words like “premium”.

Think of them as a balance, not a checklist. Pushing every grade to the top gets expensive quickly, while the smarter move is knowing which C to prioritise for the piece you’re buying. If you’re still at the start of that decision, our guide on how to choose a diamond walks through it step by step.

Diamond Cut

Cut is about craftsmanship: how well the facets are angled and proportioned to return light to your eye.

For round brilliants, GIA grades cut from Excellent through Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. A well-cut diamond looks bright and lively; a poorly cut one leaks light and looks glassy, whatever its other grades.

Don’t confuse cut with shape. Shape is the outline (round, oval, pear, cushion). Cut is how well that shape was executed. Compare the Elara Pear Diamond Drop Pendant with the Velmira Cushion Radiance Pendant to see how different shapes handle light.

Diamond Colour

Colour grading measures the absence of colour, on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

Grade range

Description

What it looks like

D–F

Colourless

Icy white

G–J

Near colourless

White to most eyes, especially once set

K–M

Faint

Slight warmth visible

N–Z

Very light to light

Noticeable yellow or brown tint

Metal colour changes the picture. A G or H diamond set in yellow gold can look whiter than it grades, because the warm metal masks any tint. White gold shows colour more honestly.

Diamond Clarity

Clarity measures inclusions (internal marks) and blemishes (surface marks). Almost every diamond has some; the question is whether you can see them.

The GIA scale runs Flawless (FL), Internally Flawless (IF), VVS1 and VVS2 (very, very slightly included), VS1 and VS2 (very slightly included), SI1 and SI2 (slightly included), and I1, I2, I3 (included).

For most jewellery, VS is the sweet spot. Inclusions are usually invisible without magnification, and you avoid paying for a difference only a gemmologist would notice. For context, the lab-grown options across Aspiri’s solitaire pieces are listed at EF colour and VVS–VS clarity.

Diamond Carat

Carat is weight, not size. One carat equals 200 milligrams and is divided into 100 “points”, so a 0.25-carat diamond is 25 points.

First, a well-cut diamond can look bigger than a heavier, poorly cut one. Second, prices jump at popular weights such as 0.50 and 1.00 carat, so choosing a stone just below those marks can save money with no visible difference.

In small pieces, carat matters less than you’d think. A single stone in the Classic Solitaire Stud Nose Pin or a slim band doesn’t need weight to stand out; it needs good cut and a clean setting.

Which of the 4Cs Matters Most?

Here’s a practical order of priority for most buyers:

1.          Cut: get the best you can afford.

2.          Colour: G to H is the value zone for white metals; you can go lower in yellow gold.

3.          Clarity: aim for eye-clean, typically VS.

4.          Carat: adjust weight to fit what’s left of your budget.

For a solitaire ring such as the Solvra Round Solitaire Diamond Ring, this order matters most because the centre stone takes all the attention. Browse more in our rings collection or diamond pendants.

How the 4Cs Affect Price

Carat pushes price up fastest, followed by colour and clarity. Two diamonds with the same weight can differ a lot in cost based on the other three Cs. Our guide to diamond jewellery by budget shows how to balance them within a realistic price range.

The 4Cs apply equally to natural and lab-grown stones. If you’re weighing the two, see lab-grown vs natural diamonds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 4Cs of a diamond? Cut, colour, clarity and carat, the global standard for grading diamond quality.

Which C affects sparkle the most? Cut. It controls how much light the diamond reflects back to your eye.

Is VS clarity good enough? Yes. VS diamonds are usually eye-clean, meaning inclusions aren’t visible without magnification.

Does carat mean size? No. Carat measures weight. Cut and shape affect how large a diamond appears.

How do I know the 4Cs grades are accurate? Ask for a certificate that states the grades in writing. Our diamond certification guide explains how to read one.
